The University of Southern Mississippi now finds itself in the company of Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Columbia as most popular schools in the United States as presented by U.S. News and World Report.

"This is wonderful recognition of the good things happening at Southern Miss,” declared President Martha Saunders. “Prospective students who take the time to pay us a visit like what they see."

The list of Most Popular Universities is one of a series of education lists compiled annually by the publication. The rankings, which were released February 25, 2011, are specific to national universities, which are research-oriented institutions and offer degrees of all levels. The figures are based upon enrollment from the fall 2009 entering class.

According to U.S. News and World Report, “One of the best indicators of a school's popularity among students is the school's yield -- the percentage of applicants accepted by a college who end up enrolling at that institution in the fall.”

No other Mississippi schools were included in the Top 20 list. The full list of schools and information on the list may be accessed at http://www.usnews.com/education/articles/2011/01/25/the-most-popular-universities
