University of Southern Mississippi Centennial homecoming queen and public relations student Denotra Logan is preparing for her next conquest – the Emmy award-winning Semester in Washington Journalism program at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Logan, a Jackson, Miss. native, is one of 20 students chosen from a pool of 130 applicants to spend a semester in the nation's capitol this summer. The Semester in Washington Journalism program (SIWJ) is a study abroad program where young journalists like Logan find their way in the world of new media. SWIJ is the only internship program where students live in downtown Washington, D.C. just a few blocks from the national mall and the White House.

“I couldn't be happier about being selected,” Logan said. “I know this will be a great opportunity to take the training I've received in the School of Mass Communication and Journalism to a bigger market like D.C. and learn more about new media. I'll get to learn about every angle of the media, not just public relations, but video production and writing for new media.”

Logan will have the opportunity to meet media industry leaders and learn the ins and outs of the industry up close and personal. She will take classes at GWU's School of Media and Public Affairs and attend lectures by industry professionals and participate in classroom seminars.

Amos Gelb, director of SIWJ, said he chose Logan due to her passion for public relations and the potential he sees in her. Students work directly with Gelb to find the right internship.

“This program builds on the foundation of great educations that students receive at universities like Southern Miss,” Gelb explained. “This program is filled with people who really want to be here. Denotra has that desire; that hunger to learn more. That's why she was chosen.”

Logan will have the opportunity to intern at places such as Smithsonian Magazine, NBC Universal, C-SPAN, BBC, Edelman Public Relations, Levick Strategic Communications, The Associated Press and other top media outlets.

After attending SIWJ, Logan hopes to either land a job or return to Southern Miss for graduate school.

“I'm excited to take this challenge and represent Southern Miss well,” Logan said.
