The University of Southern Mississippi Wind Ensemble will present a free concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 28 at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center on the Hattiesburg campus.

Under the baton of Dr. Thomas Fraschillo, the ensemble is widely known in music circles for its exceptionally gifted student performers and diverse and challenging repertoire.

Specific works for the concert finale include Shoshtakovitch's “Festive Overture,” Bach's “Fugue a la Gigue,” and an original piece by Luigi Zaninelli, “Magic Ballroom.”

Southern Miss graduate students Corey Francis, Jonathan Helmick and Bernardo Miethe will be guest conductors.

“The concert program will feature something for everybody,” said Helmick, of Akron, Ohio. “It's a culmination of a year's worth of collaboration and a very special time to honor our graduating seniors who have worked tirelessly.”

Raffaele Trevisani and Dr. Danilo Mezzadri, associate professor of flute at Southern Miss, will join the ensemble as soloists in a performance of Mozart's “Concerto in D Major for Flute, K.V. 314.”

Trevisana, a native of Milan, is one of the very few students who studied under Sir James Galway. “Raffaele belongs to the best of the flutists of the day for his beautiful singing tone, perfect technique and dedication to the art of music,” said Galway.

Trevisani began his solo career with I Solisti Veneti, performing in numerous prestigious concert series in Italy and around the world. He has also performed as soloist with the Bielefelder Philarmoniker, the Orquestra Sinfonica de Santo Andrè, the Orchestra "Cantelli", the Istanbul State Simphony Orchestra and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, among many others.

International prizewinner Danilo Mezzadri sustains an active career as a solo, chamber and orchestral player. In demand as a chamber music performer, Dr. Mezzadri has given recitals throughout Europe and the Americas.

Recently, he has been featured as a guest artist and soloist at the VIII Festival in the Mountains, Second International Festival of Santa Catarina-Brazil, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and VIII International Flute Festival. His performances have been broadcast by Rede Vida Television in Brazil and by National Public Radio in the US.

Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Southern Miss band office at 601.266.4990.
