Student Organization Helping Sponsor Red Cross Humanitarian Dinner

Students for Human Rights, (SHR) a student-led organization at The University of Southern Mississippi, is joining forces with the American Red Cross to sponsor the Red Cross Humanitarian Dinner on Thursday, Feb. 10 at the Trent Lott Center.

The dinner, set to begin at 6:30 p.m. is designed to benefit the American Red Cross of Mississippi. Mark Smith, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross of Mississippi, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address titled: “To Whom we Provide Aid.” In his speech, Smith will explain what it means to be a humanitarian and offer opinions about how far people are willing to go for their fellow man.

SHR President Daniel Krebs, a junior from Hattiesburg, Miss., said the organization currently has approximately 10 members. He noted that the group top priorities include formation of a board of directors to oversee all campus organizations affiliated with human rights causes.

“Our short-term goals are to develop the board of directors into a functioning coalition and collaboration with shared goals and a clear vision for the future,” said Krebs. “Long term, we would like to see the development of human rights groups on campus and Southern Miss becoming synonymous with human rights efforts.”

For decades the American Red Cross has played a vital humanitarian role in worldwide events such as the civil unrest currently taking place in Egypt. Southern Miss President Emeritus Aubrey K. Lucas applauds the campus group's association with the Red Cross.

“This humanitarian dinner is an opportunity to support the work of the Red Cross both here in the United States and abroad where needs are great,” said Lucas.
