Secondary school teachers from across Mississippi converged on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus last week for the ASM Materials Camp, an initiative of the ASM Materials Education Foundation supported by the U.S. Navy's Office of Naval Research.

During the one-week workshop, teacher participants learned the basics of Materials Science Technology as taught at the high school level by working hands-on with metals, ceramics, polymers and composites while learning how the project-based course inspires their students to learn science concepts as they complete projects of personal worth to them. A team of Master Teachers from across the countryprovided instruction and supervision for the workshop.

Workshop organizers were Sherry Herron, director of the university's Center for Science and Mathematics Education and Tina Masterson, laboratory teaching coordinator for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
