University Press Plans to Publish Two Volumes of Southern Quarterly in 2012

The Southern Quarterly, a member journal of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals, will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2012 with two edited volumes published by the University Press of Mississippi.
As one of only two such academic quarterlies in Mississippi, theSouthern Quarterly has developed since its founding in 1962 from a modest publishing venue for the university's humanities faculty to a respected scholarly journal of southern studies, with a distinguished editorial advisory board, a national profile and an international subscription list. Today, the journal is collected in 482 libraries worldwide.
The first of the two volumes, “Personal Souths: Interviews from the Southern Quarterly,” is a collection of interviews with noted southern writers, including Eudora Welty, Tennessee Williams, William Styron, Lee Smith and Ernest J. Gaines, all of which were previously published in the journal in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. The second volume will be a “best of” collection of scholarly essays, entitled “The Past Is Not Dead: Essays from the Southern Quarterly.”
“The Southern Quarterly is important to Southern Miss's standing as a comprehensive research university,” says Dr. Douglas Chambers, editor. “President McCain's vision of transforming Mississippi Southern College into The University of Southern Mississippi specifically included the establishment of a rigorous scholarly academic journal.”
The journal was founded in 1962 by former Southern Miss President William D. McCain, the same year that Mississippi Southern College became Southern Miss, and the year that Southern Miss first conferred doctoral degrees.
“He (McCain) understood in 1962, as we still do today, that any research university worth the title should contribute to the full range of academic interests,” Chambers continued. “Publishing a reputable, peer-reviewed journal of the humanities is one way we declare our institutional status as a comprehensive research university.”
