Shugana Williams, librarian and archivist at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, has been named the 2011-2012 president of the Society of Mississippi Archivists (SMA) during the organization's bi-annual conference held at Mississippi State University in April. As president, Williams will continue promoting quality archival education throughout the state and encourage others to utilize SMA as the main resource for preserving Mississippi's rich history.

Organized in 1977, SMA strives to promote effective communication among professional archivists, encourage the preservation and conservation of archival and manuscript materials in the state, and to assist citizens, professional organizations, educational institutions, and cultural groups in the preservation and use of recorded heritage.
