World Trade Center Artifacts on Display at Cook Library Art Gallery

Artifacts from the World Trade Center's twin towers, destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, are now on display at The University of Southern Mississippi's Cook Library Art Gallery.
The pieces were donated to the city of Hattiesburg and are housed at the university. Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree made a request on the city's behalf for artifacts from the demolished World Trade Center almost two years ago.
Jan Siesling, exhibition coordinator for University Libraries, said having the artifacts in the gallery underscore the compelling nature of the current exhibit of paintings in The 9/11 Series by New York artist Terence Netter, which runs through Nov. 5.
“I hope that members of the campus and local communities will come by to see these artifacts, which are tangible reminders of this tragic event and how Americans united in the face of adversity,” Siesling said.
The fragments are cut steel wall spandrel measuring 72 inches in length by 12 inches wide and 1-inch thick. Each piece weighs approximately 200 pounds.
The Cook Library Art Gallery, which includes selections from the Southern Miss Museum of Art's permanent collection, is open Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, contact Jan Siesling at 601.266.4241 or jan.sieslingFREEMississippi.
