American Legion Auxiliary Girls State June 3-9 at Southern Miss

More than 230 rising high school seniors from across the state will be on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus June 3-9 for American Legion Auxiliary Girls State, a program designed to help young women learn more about American government and politics.

Hands-on activities include participating in simulated government institutions such as city, county and state legislative bodies, judicial systems and political campaigns in the state of “Magnolia.” Girls State delegates will also hear speeches from elected officials who will share their perspectives on public service.

The tentative schedule of presenters/programs is as follows:

Tuesday, June 5, 3 p.m.: State Attorney General Jim Hood (Thad Cochran Center)

Tuesday, June 5, 4 p.m. : State Treasurer Lynn Fitch (Thad Cochran Center)

Wednesday, June 6, 8 a.m. : Southern Miss political science professor Marija Bekafigo gives presentation on voting and American democracy (Thad Cochran Center)

Thursday, June 7, 8 a.m. – noon : presentations by Hattiesburg justice court and city officials (Thad Cochran Center)

Thursday, June 7, 1:30 p.m. – Girls State delegates visit Camp Shelby
