Black History Month Essay Contest Entry Deadline Feb. 17

The University of Southern Mississippi chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is sponsoring a student essay contest in conjunction with Black History Month. Entry deadline is Tuesday, Feb. 17

Essays from undergraduate and graduate students at Southern Miss will be accepted, and winners will receive recognition at the Eagles Awards ceremony and a scholarship in the amount of $100.

Categories and essay topics include:

·         Undergraduate: What is the impact of popular culture (music, reality television, social media and fashion) on the African American community?

·         Graduate: What is the impact of the black family in the African-American community?

Submissions should be between 500 and 750 words. All quotations and uncommon facts should be appropriately cited. Entries must be original, unpublished work written by the contestant. Only one essay per student is allowed.

Send entries to Valencia Walls at valencia.wallsFREE.Mississippi by 11.59 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17. For entries to be considered, they must be pasted into the body of the e-mail and attached as a PDF. Name, phone number, e-mail address and a scanned copy of student identification or other proof of enrollment should be included. Submissions sent by regular mail will not be accepted.
