Wed, 03/28/2012 - 02:21pm

The Center for Community and Civic Engagement's Campus Link AmeriCorps, located at The University of Southern Mississippi, is teaming up with the Oseola McCarty Youth Development Center for a community garden project sponsored by Venue Church. The project kicks off Saturday, March 31 at 8 a.m. at the McCarty Center, located at 607 McSwain St. in Hattiesburg.

The community garden program was developed by the McCarty Center to provide an opportunity for the neighboring community to realize the importance of healthy eating habits. The McCarty Center has partnered with Venue Church in Hattiesburg to provide fresh vegetables to their community members from this garden, and is asking for volunteers to help plan and maintain the garden beginning Saturday.

Campus Link AmeriCorps is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) through the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Services (MCVS). The purpose of the program is tutoring and mentoring middle school students to increase academic proficiency in state and regular testing, self reported readiness and promotion to the next grade level.
