Debussy Scholar to Give Presentation Oct. 8 at Cochran Center

Dr. Marianne Wheeldon, one of the world's foremost authorities on French composer Claude Debussy, will give a lecture at the Thad Cochran Center Monday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Hosted by L'Association Francaise and the Southern Miss School of Music, with grant support from the Mississippi Humanities Council, Dr. Wheeldon will present “Debussy, debussysme, and the Trois Chansons de Charles d'Orleans,” an in-depth discussion which considers the historical influences that led the composer to produce two versions of this famous choral work. 

Immediately following the lecture, the Southern Miss Concert Choir, directed by Dr. John Flanery, will perform the Trois Chansons.

Dr. Wheeldon is an associate professor of music theory at the University of Texas in Austin.  She received degrees in music theory from King's College, University of London and Yale University.  Her research interests include the music of Claude Debussy, musical culture in fin-de-siècle Paris, and Schenkerian analysis. Her articles have appeared in the Journal of Musicology, Current Musicology, Integral, Perspectives of New Music, and in several collections of essays. She is the author of Debussy's Late Style and co-editor, with Elliott Antokoletz, of Rethinking Debussy.
