Fish Medicine Focus of Spring Semester Science Caf Opener

The spring 2012 Science Café series opener at The University of Southern Mississippi will focus on the growing interest in fish in the U.S., and feature a presentation by a member of the school's faculty who is knowledgeable about the aquatic animal.
Dr. Jake Schaefer, associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and curator of the University Ichthyology Collection (fish museum) will speak on his expertise in the evolution and ecology of fish Monday, Jan. 30 from 6-7:30 p.m. in Cook Library's Art Gallery, room 105 A next to Starbucks.
Schaefer's presentation will be accompanied by a video showing how more Americans are choosing fish as pets, which has lead to an emerging branch of veterinary science. There are now "fish vet" specialists performing X-rays, ultrasounds, CAT scans and MRIs, with no limits other than what pet owners are willing to spend.
A Science Café's casual meeting place, plain language, and inclusive conversation create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for people who may have no science background. Each meeting is organized around an interesting scientific topic where a scientist gives a brief presentation, and shows a short video clip to kick off the discussion.
