Gulf Coast History Student Named 2012 Jack Lucas Award Recipient
University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast student Stacie Watts of Gulfport was recently named the recipient of the 2012 Jack Lucas Award, presented by the university's Jack Lucas Award Committee and the Center for the Study of War and Society.
Watts, a senior set to graduate Saturday with her bachelor of arts in history, submitted the winning essay, “Soviet troop morale during WWII.” She will be presented the award and $150 prize during a ceremony May 8 at the Hattiesburg Public Library.
The Jack Lucas Award, given since 2009, is presented to the best undergraduate student essay written about a war and society topic. The award is made possible by the generosity of Dr. Richard McCarthy and Dr. Craig Howard.
Gulf Coast Library, Art Association to Exhibit Work of Local Artists
The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Library and the Pass Christian Art Association (PCAA) announce a group art exhibit featuring the artwork of members of the PCAA. The exhibit will be on display at the university's library on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach through June.
A variety of art media will be on exhibit, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, mixed media, pottery, photography, metal and wood sculpture and jewelry. Each piece is crafted by Mississippi Gulf Coast artists.
An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, May 17 from 3 – 5 p.m. at the library. Refreshments will be served and the community is welcome to attend. For more information, contact the Southern Miss Gulf Coast Library at 228.214.3450.
