IMPACT Southern Miss Economic Forum Set for Jan. 26 at Trent Lott Center

Experts in banking, finance and academia will converge on The University of Southern Mississippi campus for the 2nd Annual IMPACT Southern Miss: Turning Knowledge into Innovation forum, set for Jan. 26 at the Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development & Entrepreneurship.
The public forum, scheduled for 9 a.m.-1 p.m., will feature in-depth discussions about issues and research related to the economic outlook for 2012.
“The purpose of the IMPACT forum is to take a look at what we can expect of our economy in 2012 from a local, national and international perspectives, as well as offer an inside look at how Southern Miss is a leader in knowledge-led economic development,” said Rick Duke, director of the Trent Lott Center.
Dr. Lance Nail, dean of the College of Business at Southern Miss, leads an internationally recognized list of presenters. Others scheduled to speak include: Jeff Glassman, chief economist with JP Morgan; Jeff Finkle, president & CEO of the International Economic Development Council; Dr. Jeffrey Wiggins, associate professor in the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials at Southern Miss and Rick Wehmer from GE Aviation.
“Given the continuing uncertainty in the economy, the IMPACT summit brings a valuable service to our region by providing leading experts from around the country to share their thoughts and ideas on the economy with the Southern Miss community,” said Nail.
Duke notes that the presentations by Wiggins and Wehmer represent the central theme of the forum – Turning Knowledge into Innovation. The recent announcement by GE Aviation to locate an advanced manufacturing facility in Ellisville, Miss., the company's second facility in the state, is a direct result of Southern Miss' research expertise in composites and advanced materials.
