Library and Information Science Program Earns Continued Accreditation

The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at The University of Southern Mississippi has been granted continued accreditation for its master of library and information science degree program to 2019. The school is headquartered in the College of Education and Psychology.
Continuously accredited since 1980, the SLIS program at Southern Miss is one of only 63 such accredited programs in North America. The school was visited by an external review team in February as part of the accreditation review.
“Continued accreditation is a reflection of the quality of our program, and the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff and the efforts of all of our supporting constituencies,” said SLIS director Dr. Melanie Norton.
Dr. Norton gave a presentation on the program to the 12-member Committee on Accreditation (COA) board at the American Library Association annual conference in Anaheim, Ca. in June. She was accompanied by the chair of the external review team, as well as College of Education and Psychology Associate Dean Dr. Tom Lipscomb.
“We take great pride in the accreditation earned through the American Library Association,” said Dr. Ann Blackwell, dean of the college. “It is based on rigorous national standards and endorses the high quality of our faculty, staff and academic programs in the School of Library and Information Science at Southern Miss.”
