Tue, 05/01/2012 - 02:18pm | By: Charmaine Williams Schmermund

Bay St. Louis artist Lori K. Gordon will give an artist talk at the exhibit opening of “Creoles of Hancock County: The Labat Project” Thursday, May 3 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Biloxi Main Library, located at 580 Howard Avenue in Biloxi. The Labat Project is made possible by the Katrina Research Center at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Mississippi Humanities Council and Gordon.

Gordon will discuss the Labat Project, which is the second phase she began in 2000 when she conducted an oral history interview with Celestine Labat of Bay St. Louis, who lived until the age of 102. In 2011, Gordon partnered with the university's Katrina Research Center to create a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary traveling exhibit which encompasses portions of Labat's oral history and images from her family archives.

The artist talk is free and open to the public. The exhibit is on display at Biloxi Main Library through May 31. Following the presentation, a light lunch sponsored by the Southern Miss Gulf Coast College of Arts and Letters, Katrina Research Center, Biloxi Main Street and Biloxi Bay Chamber of Commerce will be provided.
