Masters in American History Available to Southern Miss Gulf Coast Students

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast is now offering a master of science degree in American history, which can assist in the career goals of secondary teachers, military officers, civil servants, journalists and librarians.

Classes will be offered in late afternoon or evenings to accommodate working professionals who prefer to maintain part-time student status. The 30-semester hour graduate degree can be completed in two and one-half years for students taking two courses each semester.

After completing the degree, secondary educators will be eligible for AA certification from the Mississippi Department of Education. Secondary educators also have the opportunity to attribute nine of their credit hours to European history to broaden their teaching to include world history courses.

The five full-time professors teaching graduate-level history courses in the program include Dr. Douglas Bristol, who earned his doctoral degree from the University of Maryland; Dr. Mao Lin, who earned his doctoral degree from the University of Georgia; Dr. Deanne Nuwer, who earned her doctoral degree from Southern Miss; Dr. Westley Follett, who earned his doctoral degree from the University of Toronto; and Dr. James Pat Smith, who earned his doctoral degree from Vanderbilt University.
