McNair Scholars Research Symposium Nov. 27 at Hattiesburg Campus

The 13th annual McNair Scholars Research Symposium at The University of Southern Mississippi will be held Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the Thad Cochran Center, room 216 on the Hattiesburg campus.

Students from various disciplines, accompanied by their faculty mentor, will present their research on each hour and half hour. The university community is encouraged to attend in support of these scholars and the program.

The schedule of presentations follows:

*9 a.m.: Demetrius Robinson, “Vocal Music in the Black American Church:  A Pedagogical Approach to Performance Practice.” (Mentor: Kimberley Davis)

*9:30 a.m.: Brittany Trotter, “Cognitive Distortions Music Majors Experience through Musical Performance Anxiety.” (Mentor: Jennifer Shank)

*10 a.m.: Caroline Griffin, “Effects from the Awareness of the Requirements Needed to Obtain an MPA Degree on Undergraduate Students in Business Courses.” (Mentor: Roderick Posey)

*10:30 a.m.: Suquetta Sewell, “How Lead Poisoning Is a Health Concern among Children, but is Publically Unrecognized.”(Mentor: Cynthia Handley)

*11 a.m.: Matthew Cooley, “The Practicum Experience:  An Analysis of the Relationship Created between Practicum Students and Athletes.” (Mentor: Brian Gearity)

*11:30 a.m.: Selena Smith, “Racial Differences in Self-efficacy Expectations for Exercise.” (Mentors: Scott Piland, Melissa Murry)

*12 p.m.: Kristen Mechanic, “On the Relation between Parenting Practices and Pathological Narcissism in Adolescents.” (Mentor: Chris Barry)

*12:30 p.m.: Mercedes Le, “An Acoustical Analysis of Speech Therapy Classrooms.” (Mentor: Mary Schaub)

*1 p.m.: Stephanie Rambo, “A Very Different Looking Class of People: The Mulatto Citizen in Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, Webb's The Garies and Their Friends, and Brown's Clotel.” (Mentor: Sherita Johnson)

*1:30 p.m.: Donaven McLaurin, “Using Manipulative Models to Develop Tree Thinking.” (Mentor: Kristy Halverson)

*2 p.m.: Jazmyne Butler, “Professional First Ladies in the Media: Framing of Clinton, Bush and Obama in The Washington Post.” (Mentor: Cheryl Jenkins)

*2:30 p.m.:  Ashley Barnes, “Interpersonal Desirability for the Self-defeating Humorist.” (Mentor: Randolph Arnau)

*3 p.m.: LaTerence Varnado, “Exploring the Relationship between the Socioeconomic Status of Music Students and Their Instrument Choices.” (Mentor: Amanda Schlegel)

Dr. Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair Scholars Program) was established at Southern Miss in 1999 and honors Dr. Ronald E. McNair, an astronaut killed in the Challenger space shuttle disaster in 1986. The program prepares qualified students underrepresented in graduate education for success in graduate school.
