Move-in Days, Painting of Eagle Walk, Road Closures Scheduled

Move-in days for students returning to The University of Southern Mississippi for the fall 2012 semester who live in campus housing have been scheduled for Friday, Aug. 17 and Saturday, Aug. 18.

In order to facilitate a smooth transition for new and returning students, the University Police Department and the Department of Parking Management will again block lots, close streets and direct motorists to better manage traffic during these two days. 

In addition, Painting of the Eagle Walk, one of the main events in the Golden Eagle Welcome Week schedule, will necessitate closure of Eagle Walk (located under the east side of M.M. Robert Stadium) on Thursday, Aug. 16 beginning at 7 a.m. for cleaning. Eagle Walk will reopen Friday, Aug. 17 at 7 a.m. for move-in days and will close again Saturday, Aug. 18 at 10 p.m. and remained closed until the start of classes on Wednesday, Aug. 22.

The move-in weekend schedule is as follows:

  • Friday, August 17, 8 a.m. – noon :  Students who live in Century Parkand a portion of Wilber (Panhellenic) Hall and Hattiesburg/Mississippi/Hickman Halls will move in to their rooms.
  • Saturday, August 18, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.:Students will move into their rooms in the residence halls located in the Freshman Quad (behind Wilber Hall), as well as all other residence halls.

Beginning Thursday at 5 p.m., East Memorial Drive will be closed to all through traffic. Students, faculty and staff are asked to vacate parking in the area of East Memorial Drive as well as the parking lot located behind the Student Health Services Clinic (Bolton Hall parking lot) at this time. The Roberts Hall parking lot (located at the Quad) and spaces in front of Wilber Hall must also be vacated at this time. In addition, all vehicles parked in the lot east of Century Park must be moved. Vehiclesnotremoved from these areas by 5 p.m. will be towed.

OnFriday, Aug. 17, faculty and staff parking will not be available on Southern Miss Avenue, Alumni Drive, Felder Drive and Smalling Drive in front of the Southern Miss Foundation; Service Drive and College Drive in front of the Human Performance and Recreation Building (HYPER); and east of the HYPER parking lot to allow for parking for new residents. Faculty/staff parking will be allowed in the Kennard Washington lot, but entry will be blocked off beginning at 1 p.m. to prepare for Saturday's residence hall move-in.  

Access to East Memorial will only be given to students moving into Hattiesburg, Mississippi and Hickman Halls. Access to the Roberts Hall parking lot (Quad) will only be given to students moving into Pulley, Bolton, Roberts and Jones Halls for unloading only. The Roberts lot (Quad) will not be opened to parking during this time and will remain blocked off in preparation for Saturday's move-in.

East Memorial will not re-open at the conclusion of move-in-day on Aug. 17. On Saturday, Aug. 18, access will only be granted to late arrivals and handicapped access into Hickman, Hattiesburg and Mississippi Halls. All vehicles leaving this area, including the Bolton parking lot, will not be granted re-entry until after 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18.
