Round for Roots Radio Golf Tournament May 24 at Hattiesburg Country Club

Wed, 04/25/2012 - 12:10pm

The second annual Round for Roots Radio golf tournament will be held Thursday, May 24 at the Hattiesburg Country Club. The University of Southern Mississippi's campus radio station, WUSM-FM, hosts the tournament annually to raise money for operating expenses and to raise awareness about the station. Hattiesburg native Randy Swan, news director of WDAM-TV and a WUSM fan, is chairing the event.

The voice of Southern Miss since 1969, part of WUSM's mission is to serve the university and the greater Hattiesburg community. The station was established to facilitate, support, and enhance the university's larger mission of teaching, training, and service. In addition to supporting Southern Miss programs and activities, WUSM also supports local civic organizations, listeners, and sponsors and underwriters.

WUSM also provides practical experience for students seeking a career in radio. Students produce live shows, gather and produce news segments, record announcements and gain other valuable hands-on experience. Listener donations and fundraising events assure that students have access to modern equipment at the station, allowing them to compete on a national level for jobs in the field.

Tournament sponsors include Southern Miss Catering, Hattiesburg Clinic, the Southern Miss School of Mass Communication and Journalism, Petro Nissan, Ashley Furniture Home Store, Hattiesburg Coca-Cola and Southern Beverage.
