Sheffer Awarded NATPE Fellowship

Dr. Mary Lou Sheffer, associate professor in The University of Southern Mississippi's School of Mass Communication and Journalism, is the recipient of a fellowship from the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE).
The highly competitive fellowship is awarded to only 14 professors from across the country, allowing them to attend the association's working conference currently being held in Miami. A member of the Southern Miss faculty since 2008, Sheffer serves as the school's broadcast journalism sequence head.
The NATPE provides valuable information and resources to its membership, which is comprised of companies and individuals involved in or wanting to become involved with the creation, development and distribution of television programming. It also serves as a catalyst for idea sharing, discussion and debate regarding trends and practices in the television industry as it relates to programming.
Sheffer has more than 10 years experience in broadcasting, and is a documentary videographer for several award-winning programs that have aired on PBS. Her research areas include sports media, media management and the influence of new technologies on established news mediums. She currently serves as chair of the Sports Media Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).
