The University of Southern Mississippi Debate Society will take its persuasive talents to James Madison University to compete in the Madison Cup debate tournament April 11-13.

The James Madison Center at James Madison University sponsors the event in the spirit of James Madison's ideal that a republican democracy is healthy only when informed and civil debate thrives.

Six members of the Southern Miss team will compete, including: Michael Sims (president), Brandon Hersey (vice president), Samantha Rayborn (commissioner), Carrie Paris (secretary), Connor Blakeney (keeper), Joshua Von Herrmann, and Stacy Ahua (graduate coordinator) along with Dr. Steven Venette.

“The debaters will bring honor and recognition to Southern Miss by competing against other prestigious universities,” said Dr. Steven Venette, associate professor in Communication Studies. “Our students will demonstrate that members of the USM learning community can go toe-to-toe with traditional powerhouses of intellectual pursuits. In many ways, Southern Miss is not just going “to the top” – we are already there.”
