Southern Miss Debate Society Participates in Madison Cup Invitational

The University of Southern Mississippi Debate Society recently participated in the Madison Cup Invitational Debate Tournament, held at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.

It was the first collegiate debate tournament for the group, which entered two teams.   Participating students included Samantha Rayborn, Joshua von Herrmann, Brandon Hersey and Michael Sims.

Other universities and colleges participating in the tournament included the College of William and Mary, Cornell University, James Madison University, Morehouse University, University of Georgia, University of Cape Town, Yale University, Liberty University and the University of Miami, with 24 teams from the schools competing in the tournament.

Southern Miss Team 1, composed of Rayborn and von Herrmann, placed in the top 10 overall and earned a $500 prize for the debate society. Southern Miss Team 2 placed 11th overall. 

Dr. Steven Venette of the Southern Miss Department of Communication Studies worked with the team to prepare them for the event.
