Several University of Southern Mississippi faculty members will take the stage with the Southern Miss Symphony Orchestra to perform an exciting program of classical and classical-style pieces at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1 in Bennett Auditorium.

Associate professor Alexander Russakovsky, cello, and assistant professor Hsiaopei Lee, viola, are each featured in solo concertos with Maestro Jay Dean taking the podium to conduct Mozart's “Haffner” Symphony.

“This is truly a delightful program,” said Dean. “It is always a joy to perform with our talented faculty. You can feel the added energy when the performers are playing with their teachers.”

Cuban-born, graduate conducting student, Ivan del Prado conducts the concerto portion of the program. The viola concerto by Carl Philipp Stamitz, is one of the most exciting written for the instrument and is a favorite around the world. Attributed to Johann Christian Bach, the cello concerto was actually composed as a tribute in 1911 by Henri Casadesus.

The younger Bach's music is known for being more melodic and less contrapuntal than his father's, J. S. Bach.  The J.C. Bach/Casadesus Concerto is a wonderful 20th tribute to the classical style. Truly Mozart at his symphonic best, audiences will delight to the light, graceful, elegant and fiery, “Haffner” Symphony.

Season ticket holders and members of Partners for the Arts are invited to join in the President's Prelude at 6 p.m. in the Ogletree House preceding the concert. Please RSVP by calling 601.266.6292.
