Williams Receives Preserver of MS Culture Award at Humanities Council Dinner
The Mississippi Humanities Council has namedShugana Williams, librarian and assistant archivist for The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Library and Katrina Research Center, as the 2012 recipient of the Preserver of Mississippi Culture Award. The award recognizes an individual for extraordinary efforts to protect and promotethe cultural traditions and assets of the state of Mississippi.
Williams, who accepted the award at the council's annual awards dinner held Feb. 25, was presented a piece of artwork bearing her name. In addition to the Preserver of Mississippi Culture Award, the Mississippi Humanities Council also recognized the recipients of the Humanities Scholar Award, Humanities Educator Award, Humanities Partner Award and Special Recognition Award.
Local Artists, Vendors Welcome to Join Jazz and Blues Festival April 7
Local artists and crafts vendors are invited to be part of the Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday, April 7 at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.
The university is featuring a juried show for the festival. Vendors with a registration form postmarked by March 15 will pay a $35 booth fee plus $15 jury fee for the 10' x 10' space. Registration forms postmarked after March 15 include a $60 booth fee, plus $15 jury fee.
The festival will feature jazz and blues artists, local cuisine, arts and crafts vendors, and an Easter egg hunt. Scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the festival is free and open to the public. History Professor Presents Research at Washington Workshop
Dr. Douglas Bristol, associate professor of history at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, presented his research Feb. 25 at the Globalization of African American Business and Consumer Culture Workshop, held at the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C.
Bristol's research, “Exported Racism: African-American Consumerism, Black Sailors and the Cold War in Greece, 1972-74,” was presented alongside faculty from Trinity College and the German Historical Institute.

School of Nursing to Host Blood Drive March 1 in Long Beach
The School of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast is hosting a blood drive Thursday, March 1, from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. in room 104 of the Fleming Education Center on the university's Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.
Donors will receive a free tee shirt and are asked to bring identification. The School of Nursing, partnered with Mississippi Blood Services, ask that donors eat at least four hours before giving blood and consume plenty of fluids before and after making a donation.
