Lucy Matthews Hunt of Vicksburg, Miss. was honored during the spring 2012 semester as The University of Southern Mississippi's top student teacher by the Mississippi Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (MACTE).

Hunt attended Vicksburg High School, where she was inducted into the National Honor Society and was a member of the varsity soccer team. She studied at Hinds Community College and then transferred to Southern Miss, where she completed requirements for the English licensure program in order to teach English at the secondary school level.

“As in high school and at Hinds, my professors at USM were no less than phenomenal, and I learned so much from their instruction,” Hunt said. “I would not be where I am now without the support of my family, teachers, professors, mentor teachers and supervisors.  They gave me the confidence I needed to become a successful member of society, and instilled in me the qualities a great teacher needs.”

The MACTE provides leadership in Mississippi for the continuing transformation of professional preparation programs to ensure competent and caring educators for all of Mississippi's children and youth. It is the principal professional association and primary voice for college and university leaders with responsibility for educator preparation.
