Southern Miss Looks to Increase Recycling Efforts at Home Football Games

The Student Government Association and the Office of Sustainability at The University of Southern Mississippi have partnered on an initiative to raise awareness about the importance of recycling by providing additional receptacles at home football games.
But the effort doesn't stop there. More than 80 students also will be canvassing the west side stands at M.M. Roberts Stadium during halftime of Saturday's game against Louisville to collect recyclable items. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
“This is the first time anyone can remember SGA doing something like this,” said SGA vice-president Allie Solomon. “We are calling this our ‘halftime sweep.' We'll have volunteers going through the stands with two bags – one for food and other types of trash and a blue bag for items that can be recycled.”
Haley McMinn, assistant director of sustainability at Southern Miss, said a renewed effort to promote recycling on campus began with the football team's first home game of the 2012 season on Sept. 15.
“We had additional bins placed throughout the stadium and we collected more items from that one game than we did for all home games combined (six total) last year,” said McMinn. “By partnering with the SGA on this new initiative, we are hoping to collect even more for the upcoming home game and others that follow.”
