Wed, 03/21/2012 - 02:11pm

Southern Miss students and faculty will participate in the Lockheed Martin Mississippi IT Day in Jackson March 30.

The University of Southern Mississippi College of Science and Technology is busy preparing for the upcoming Lockheed Martin annual Information Technology (IT) Day at the Jackson Convention Complex March 30. The daylong event is designed to increase IT education and awareness, as well as to encourage networking and collaboration in industry, academia and the community.

“The theme of this years' IT Day is ‘Forecast the Future,'” said Dr. Joe B. Whitehead Jr., dean of the College of Science and Technology. “Faculty from our School of Computing will be on hand to showcase information technology opportunities at Southern Miss.  Southern Miss students are invited to participate in educational sessions and to visit with recruiters from Lockheed Martin and other employers.”

More than 800 area high school and college students will participate in the IT Day program, as well as compete in sponsored quiz bowl challenges designed to increase the students' knowledge and interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects.

A panel of industry experts will discuss topics such as big data, cloud computing, and cyber security.  “We are thrilled to partner with Lockheed Martin in promoting and increasing student awareness of information technology opportunities,” Whitehead said.

IT Day also includes a vendor expo showcasing technology and services from more than 50 local and national IT vendors and academic partners.

“We are honored to host IT Day once again this year,” said MacArthur DeShazer, director, Small Business Development, Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Solutions (IS&GS).  “We opened a state-of-the-art Mission Support Center in nearby Clinton six months ago, so this event allows us to increase our presence in this community and region - one that we value based on its outstanding talent, economic partnerships and wealth of academic resources.”
