Southern Miss Schedules Black History Month Events

Black History Month at The University of Southern Mississippi will be marked by several events and programs scheduled on the Hattiesburg campus through February. The national theme for Black History Month is “Black Women in American Culture and History," established by the Association of the Study of African American Life and History.
The schedule of events includes the following:
Feb. 1: Black History Month Essay Contest. The goal of this program is for students to address issues in the African American community. Contact Evingerlean Blakney at evingerlean.blakneyFREEeagles.Mississippi for details.
Feb. 7: Soul Food lunch, Fresh Food Company in the Thad Cochran Center, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Feb. 9: Made in America: Famous Black Greeks in National Pan-Hellenic organizations. Information display will be held from 12-2 p.m., R.C. Cook Union lobby; program is set for 7-8 p.m., R.C. Cook Union Hall of Honors.
Feb. 15: Health Awareness program, Thad Cochran Center ballroom I, 5-7 p.m.
Feb. 27: Black history program Then and Now, “From the Cotton Field to the White House,” 5:30 p.m., Student Activities Hub open space, first floor. This event is sponsored by the Southern Miss College Democrats.
Feb. 27: Eagle Awards, Thad Cochran ballrooms II and III, 7-9 p.m. The highlight of this program is recognition of the achievements and contributions of African Americans in the university community and Hattiesburg area.
