Jasmine Thomas, an elementary education major with endorsements in mathematics and social studies at The University of Southern Mississippi, recently received the Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship Award. Thomas is the only recipient of the $1,000 scholarship this year in the state of Mississippi.

Thomas said winning the award will provide important assistance in furthering her education. “It's a big accomplishment for me. School can be so hard to pay for, so it's nice to know my education is secured,” said Thomas.

This particular scholarship was founded in 1988 in honor of Jo Anne J. Trow, the national president of Alpha Lambda Delta. The scholarship is designed to encourage students who excel in academics, and is awarded to standing sophomores who maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Thomas, 20, is a junior at Southern Miss and currently serves as the president of the university's chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta. She was selected by the National Council of Alpha Lambda Delta after submitting a written essay on what it means to be in the honor society. Transcripts, recommendations, and advisor approvals were also reviewed before Thomas was declared the top applicant.

She is the daughter of Doris Thomas of Picayune, Miss.
