The University of Southern Mississippi's largest annual outreach initiative, The Big Event, is set for Saturday, April 14 when students, faculty and staff volunteers from the university fan out across the Hattiesburg area to give their time and energy to worthwhile community service projects. More than 300 volunteers are expected to participate.

All volunteers are asked to gather at The District, located next to the Ogletree Alumni House, at 8:30 a.m. for a light breakfast and to get their community service assignment, and then be transported from there to approximately a dozen work sites. They will  return later to The District for lunch.

Sponsored by the Student Government Association, The Big Event was launched at Southern Miss in 2010 during the university's Centennial Celebration as a way to show the school's appreciation to the surrounding communities that support it.

Other supporters of The Big Event include Eagle Dining; Residence Life; and the Alumni Association.
