The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Theatre and Dance will present “Anna in the Tropics”by Nilo Cruz, opening March 29 in the Gilbert F. Hartwig Theatre.

This Pulitzer Prize-winning drama is set in a Cuban-American cigar factory in Florida in 1929, where cigars are still rolled by hand and “lectors” are employed to educate and entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector who reads aloud from Anna Karenina becomes a catalyst in the lives of his listeners, leading them to express passionate needs and desires. The production is recommended for mature audiences.

“Anna in the Tropics” performs March 29, 30, 31, April 3 and 4 at 7:30 pm; and April 1 at 2 pm.  There will be a pre-show talk by Dr. Luis Iglesias of the Department of English on April 1 at 1 pm.
