“Sports Nutrition: Playing a Winning Game” served as the topic of the 3rd Annual Department of Nutrition and Food Systems Seminar held earlier this month at The University of Southern Mississippi.

More than 80 students, faculty and community members attended the annual seminar which featured elements of nutrition as it relates to various professions and current topics. This year's seminar featured three sports dietitians -- Jamie Mascari, Rebecca Turner and Tavis Piattoly.

Mascari, a New Orleans native and former cheerleader at Louisiana State University, focused on the role of a sports dietitian and related the presentation to her current role as Coordinator of Sports Nutrition for LSU Athletics.

Turner, a Southern Miss nutrition alumnus, dedicated her presentation to entrepreneurship in the world of sports nutrition. Turner serves as Nutrition Affairs Program Manager for the Southeast Dairy Association and is the founder of Runner's FUEL.

Piattoly, a sports dietitian and nutrition consultant for the New Orleans Saints, New Orleans Hornets and Tulane University athletic department, spoke about nutrition, hydration, and dietary supplementation for athletes.

Andrea Carter, a student in the Department of Nutrition and Food Systems, noted that the seminar showed her “the importance of taking initiative to achieve her professional goals and that hard work and perseverance truly pay off in the end.”
