Voting Underway to Determine New Look for Southern Miss Band

Mon, 10/15/2012 - 10:42am

The Pride of Mississippi Marching Band is one of the area's most visible ambassadors. Its acclaim has led scores to audition to become part of the group and now, the members are busting at the seams – literally.

To outfit the capacity band this year has presented a challenge to say the least. A new look is planned to replace the decade-old uniforms.

“Band members take such great pride in representing Southern Miss,” said Mohamad Schuman, director of The Pride. “The Pride represents the spirit of the University with dedicated musicians who invest countless hours to live up to the name.”

Designers from across the country were approached with the challenge to design a contemporary new uniform for the 2013 football season. Now, The Pride is asking students, alumni, friends and fans to vote on the three final designs to choose the new look of the band.

To vote, simply visit the band's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/prideofmississippi. Voting opens Oct. 15 and closes Oct. 26. From those who vote for the winning design, a drawing will be held and the lucky winner will get VIP treatment at the first home game of 2013 to be a part of the new uniform debut.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to have a whole new look as the university moves into the next century,” said Dr. Catherine Rand, director of bands. “It is wonderful that the university community has come together to make this possible.”
