Gulf Coast Research Lab to Host Evening with Award-winning Nature Photographer

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) in Ocean Springs will host an evening with award-winning nature photographer Tom Ulrich at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in GCRL's Caylor Auditorium.

The wildlife photography presentation will feature Ulrich's work from the past year, with a focus on the spring bird migration in Texas, scenic shots of Glacier National Park and Africa.

Ulrich grew up in South Chicago, graduated with a degree in biology from Southern Illinois University and taught biology for four years before launching his career as a freelance photographer. He has supported himself with nature photography for more than 35 years.

His library of more than 800,000 images includes birds and mammals from all over the world. His photographs have been featured in publications such as National Wildlife, Audubon, National Geographic, and Montana Outdoors. He has published seven nature books.

The event and reception following is free to the public.

Ulrich will also be holding a digital photography workshop on Thursday, Jan. 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at GCRL. Some of the topics included in this workshop will be: manual and automatic settings, rules of composition, Adobe Photoshop and things to consider when purchasing or upgrading a digital camera. The cost of the workshop will be $40 per person. A Q&A and critique of participant's photos will immediately follow the workshop (3 photo maximum) Call 228.872.4254 to register.
