Incoming University of Southern Mississippi President Dr. Rodney Bennett received special recognition from the Mississippi Legislature during ceremonies held in the House and Senate chambers on Thursday, March 14.

Bennett, who officially takes over at Southern Miss on April 1, was honored with the reading of House Concurrent Resolution No. 88 welcoming him as the University's 10th president.

In part, the resolution states:

“WHEREAS, as Dr. Bennett prepares to assume the presidency of USM this spring, it is only fitting that we respectfully acknowledge this important occasion in the history of The University of Southern Mississippi and the State of Mississippi.”

Before accepting the Southern Miss presidency, Bennett served as vice president for Student Affairs at the University of Georgia. He will become the first African American president of a predominantly white university in Mississippi.
