National Center Offers New Certification Program for Sport Venue Staff

To improve the standardization of sports safety and security training and background screening for traffic/parking attendants, gate security, ticket takers, ushers, guest services representatives, cleaning attendants, concession staff and retail associates, the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) at The University of Southern Mississippi now offers a Certified Sport Venue Staff (CSVS) Certification.

The CSVS Certification consists of a criminal background check, as well as online training and testing. It is designed for all levels of venue/event staff such as professional, collegiate, high school and amateur events/venues. Once registered, game day staff are eligible to go through one or all of role-specific training modules.

The training program is designed so that each member of the event team will learn basic responsibilities such as the importance of communication and observation, how to identify, assess, and evaluate safety and security risks, implementing emergency plans, and key techniques for problem solving and conflict resolution.

A license agreement has been established between the NCS4 and eVerifile, a leader in pre-employment and contractor screening and background investigations.

Chase Kasper, director of The University of Southern Mississippi's newly-formed Office of Technology Development which oversees the university's intellectual property and technology licensing, helped guide eVerifile and NCS4 through the licensing process.

“We're excited about formalizing the relationship with eVerifile,” said Kasper. “It is an excellent example of our university's ability to continue to establish key public-private relationships to transfer university-created intellectual property developed out of its research enterprise.”

NCS4 Director Lou Marciani agrees regarding the benefits of the partnership. “This relationship with eVerifile allows us to be able to provide candidates with a security credential of significant value,” he said. “One of our goals at NCS4 is to elevate the sports security profession by creating standards and the CSVS Certification does just that.”

The CSVS is valid for three years and the cost $36 per individual.
