Gulf Park Campus Offers GRE Study Sessions for Students, Community

The Learning Commons and the Gulf Coast Library at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus are providing free Graduate Record Examination (GRE) study sessions, which are available to both students and the community.

The remaining study sessions for fall 2013 are Oct. 26 and Nov. 23, which will focus on the verbal area of the GRE. An additional session will be held Nov. 9 focusing on the mathematics section of the GRE. All sessions will be held from 12 – 2 p.m. in room 107 of the library, located on the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

Professor, Students Receive Best Poster Award at Conference

University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus undergraduate students in the College of Education and Psychology, along with their professor Dr. Michael Mong, received the highest number of votes to be awarded the Best Poster Award at the International Organization of Social Sciences and Behavioral Research Conference in New Orleans, La.

The presentation, made by Shelby Mcgrew of Ocean Springs, Jessica Sciara of D'Iberville, Courtney Potter of Biloxi, Michelle Williams of Bay St. Louis and Elizabeth Thorpe of Gulfport was led by Mong, assistant professor of psychology. The result of a collaborative effort among all of Mong's 491 research students, the poster was voted on by conference attendees and selected among other posters by faculty and graduate students.

“The entire process, from topic generation to presentation, was student-driven, so I am thrilled that they are being rewarded for their efforts,” said Mong.

Academic Dean Lansford's Book Chapter on Congressional Elections Published

A book chapter written by Dr. Tom Lansford, academic dean and professor of political science at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, was recently published in “The Roads to Congress 2012” from Lexington Books of Lanham, Md.

Lansford's chapter, titled “Wisconsin Senate Race: The Most Negative Senate Race in State History,” contributes to the book's formative aspects of the 2012 campaign season, as well as in-depth coverage of key races for Congress. “The Roads to Congress 2012” is described as having chapters that are “both narrative and provide analysis of an array of interesting and diverse contests from throughout the country… The authors provide succinct and highly readable chapters meant to illustrate the distinctive nature of the campaigns they are examining.”
