Southern Miss Honors College Dean Performs Gangnam Style Routine

Never one to shy away from the Southern Miss spotlight, Dr. Dave Davies, dean of the Honors College, performed his rendition of the “Gangnam Style” dance on Friday, June 21 in support of the University's annual faculty/staff giving campaign.

Davies, joined by mascot Seymour and several Honors College ambassadors, showed off his moves to the song/dance popularized by South Korean artist Psy. Davies, who participated in a “Dancing with the Deans” event as part of the 2012 faculty/staff campaign, said this year's performance resulted from a Facebook challenge.

“I said on Facebook that if we got 50 additional faculty and staff members to sign up for the campaign this year that I would do the ‘Gangnam Style' dance,” said Davies. “Well, we exceeded that number and I was forced to make good on my promise.”

Designated as the Campaign for Southern Miss, the gift-giving initiative is administered through the USM Foundation. Foundation officials announced that 36 percent of full-time employees at Southern Miss made gifts to the campaign – up from 32 percent a year ago. Davies served as the steering committee chair for the 2013 campaign.

“There's nothing more important for those of us who live and work in this community than to support this great university,” said Davies. “Opening our wallets and giving back is just one way to show how much we support Southern Miss and its mission.”
