Southern Miss Honors College Student Awarded Hollings Scholarship

A University of Southern Mississippi Honors College student is the recipient of a prestigious National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship.

Kendall Moore, Jr., a sophomore computer science major from Madison, Miss. and a Presidential Scholar at Southern Miss, earned the award that includes funding for two academic years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time summer internship at a NOAA facility. It is named for retired U.S. Sen. Ernest F. Hollings of South Carolina.

The internship is conducted between the first and second years of the award, and provides recipients with a multidisciplinary educational and training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management and education activities.

"Kendall is an absolutely terrific student and will excel in the internship program offered through the Hollings Scholarship,” said Dr. David R. Davies, dean of the Honors College. “He's a great fit for this program, and he'll represent Southern Miss and the Honors College well."

Moore said he's honored to receive the nationally competitive scholarship and believes it will benefit him with his career goal of working in computer simulation. “It's a great opportunity, and I'm looking forward to learning about the cutting-edge technology the agency uses,” he said.

The Hollings Scholarship is primarily awarded to undergraduates majoring in a scientific discipline or science education with the goals of increasing undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science research, technology and education and fostering multidisciplinary training opportunities; and increasing public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improving environmental literacy.

“I believe NOAA made an excellent choice in Kendall. He's a bright young man and a hard worker,” said Stacey Ready, coordinator of general honors and assistant to the dean of the Honors College. “When it comes to his desire to learn about developments in computer science, he's willing to step forward and do what it takes.”
