Southern Miss Students, Faculty Honored at MRPA Conference in Tupelo

Students and faculty members from the School of Human Performance and Recreation at The University of Southern Mississippi received multiple honors at the Mississippi Recreation and Park Association's annual conference held recently in Tupelo, Miss. Twenty-five therapeutic recreation majors and three faculty members attended the conference.

Three seniors majoring in therapeutic recreation received the following honors:

*Jamie (Missy) Arrant was selected to serve as Student Representative to the Board of Directors.
 *Lindsay Davis was awarded the Convention Scholarship.
 *Karolyne Rehner received the Student Scholarship Award.

“It is such an honor to receive this award and have my hard work recognized. I'm passionate about therapeutic recreation and look forward to using recreation to improve the lives of others in my future career,” said Rehner.

Dr. Mary Ann Aquadro was elected to serve as President of the Mississippi Therapeutic Recreation Alliance and Megan Marlowe was elected to serve as President-Elect.

“The Recreation Program at Southern Miss has always pursued leadership roles with our state professional organizations. I believe we are recognized statewide for our quality and our leadership in the area of therapeutic recreation,” said Dr. Rick Green, program director. “The election of Dr. Aquadro and Ms. Marlowe to leadership positions will help us reach our goal of obtaining regional and eventual national recognition for excellence.”

The School of Human Performance and Recreation prepares professionals concerned with improving the quality of life of individuals by addressing issues related to health, leisure, exercise and sport. Its 900 majors at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels are active contributors to university life and are preparing to make outstanding accomplishments in their chosen majors.
