Wiesenburg Distinguished Lecture Series Begins on April 22 at Stennis

The Department of Marine Science and Center for Gulf Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi has announced the inauguration of the “Denis and Jean Wiesenburg Distinguished Lecture in Ocean Science.”
The lecture series kicks off with a presentation by Dr. John O. Dabiri, professor of Aeronautics and Engineering at Caltech. Dabiri will deliver a lecture titled, “Do Swimming Animals Mix the Ocean?” at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 22 at NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center.
Dabiri will also present a lecture open to the general public as part of the Honors College Forum at Southern Miss' main campus in Hattiesburg on Tuesday, April 23. That presentation, titled “Jellyfish-Inspired Engineering” will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Thad Cochran Center Ballroom.
A 2010 MacArthur Fellow, Dabiri graduated from Princeton University with a B.S.E. degree summa cum laude in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University. He earned master's degree in Aeronautics, followed by a doctorate in Bioengineering with a minor in Aeronautics from Caltech.
His honors include an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award and a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for his research in bio-inspired propulsion.
About the Lecture Series
The Distinguished Lecture in Ocean Science series is dedicated to Dr. Denis Wiesenburg, provost at The University of Southern Mississippi, and his wife, Jean Wiesenburg. Denis Wiesenburg, past chair of the Department of Marine Science, continues to be active in the pursuit of excellence in marine science at Southern Miss and across the nation. His contributions to Southern Miss in the field oceanography helped lay the foundation for the University's early designation by the State's Institutions of Higher Learning as Mississippi's center of excellence in marine and coastal science.
