Community, Environmental Activist to Present at Sept. 23 University Forum

An internationally prominent activist devoted to social and environmental causes will be the next speaker for The University of Southern Mississippi's University Forum.

Dr. Robert Jensen, a member of the faculty in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas will present “Crises, Ecological and Social” Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in room 103 A-D in the Trent Lott Center on the Hattiesburg campus. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Jensen writes for popular media, both alternative and mainstream. His opinion and analytic pieces on foreign policy, politics, economics, and ecology have appeared in publications and on websites worldwide. His most recent books include Arguing for Our Lives: A User's Guide to Constructive Dialogue and We Are All Apocalyptic Now: On the Responsibilities of Teaching Preaching, Reporting, Writing and Speaking Out.

"Professor Jensen is precisely the sort of provocative thinker our students will love,” said Dr. David R. Davies, interim director of the USM School of Mass Communication and Journalism. “Our journalism students will be challenged to do their best work, and students of all majors will appreciate his insights on the intersection of journalism and our culture."

Jensen also contributes to local organizing in Austin, Texas through his work with the Third Coast Activist Resource Center, which offers educational resources and organizes community events about U.S. policy around the world; and 5604 Manor, a community center focused on positive social change.
