DuBard School Director Martin Elected to National Board

Dr. Maureen K. Martin, director of the DuBard School for Language Disorders at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been elected to serve on the board of directors for the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA), a national organization that certifies dyslexia therapists and practitioners.
Martin has served as the director of the DuBard School for 38 years, and has served on many other boards including the Mississippi Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council and more. She worked under the DuBard School founder Dr. Etoile DuBard, has assisted on the development of the DuBard Association Method®, co-authored Teaching Language-Deficient Children: Theory and Application of the Association Method for Multisensory Teaching (2000) with Dr. DuBard, and authored the newest edition, Oral and Written Communication Disorders: Identification and Multisensory Teaching (2012).
“Serving on the board of directors for an organization like ALTA is a privilege I do not take lightly,” said Martin. “It is the responsibility of the board to ensure the highest standards are maintained in order to best serve the many individuals who are struggling with dyslexia.”
ALTA is a nonprofit organization that has been in existence for 27 years, and was created in order to establish, maintain and promote standards of education, practice and professional conduct for Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALTs). CALTs use an educational, structured, comprehensive, phonetic, multisensory approach for remediation of dyslexia and written language disorders.
ALTA has also formed an alliance with the International Multisensory Structured Language Educational Council (IMSLEC). This alliance provides criteria and standards for quality control of Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE) professional training and instruction of individuals with dyslexia and related disorders.
The DuBard School for Language Disorders is an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) continuing education provider. Its professional development program is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and is an International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Accredited Program that meets the IDA standards for teachers of reading.
