Gulf Park Campus Charters New Student Organizations Representing Sustainability, Math, Science

The University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Park campus in Long Beach chartered two new student organizations during the spring semester. EcoEagles and Sigma Mu: Science and Math Club are both approved to serve as organizations for Southern Miss Gulf Coast students.

EcoEagles was created to promote a community that supports the social, economic and environmental tenets of sustainability. Through the EcoEagles student organization, members will encourage healthy dialogue and awareness of decisions that can impact future generations. The faculty advisor for EcoEagles is Dr. David Holt, associate professor of geography.

The second student organization chartered during the spring semester is Sigma Mu: Science and Math Club. Members of this organization intend to promote the use of mathematics and science outside the classroom. Marlene Naquin, mathematics instructor, will serve as the faculty advisor for Sigma Mu.

The Student Organizations Council serves as an advisory group for all student organizations looking to receive official recognition as a member of the university community. The function of the council is to review, with the requesting organizations, all applications for chartering a student organization and then vote on whether to grant an organization its charter. 

The Student Organizations Council consists of faculty, staff and student representatives from the chartered student organizations at Southern Miss Gulf Coast. Once approved by the council, organization information is submitted to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs for final approval.
