The Mississippi Opera will present the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company's production of The Merry Widow, Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. at the Madison Square Center for the Arts in Madison, Miss. located at 2103 Main St.

“The music of this show is beautiful,” said Dr. Jay Dean, director of The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and music director for The Merry Widow. “The wonderfully talented cast is brimming with comedic charm that audiences will love.”

The Merry Widow is one of the most popular operettas ever written. With its beautiful melodies, it never fails to please. The story is based on a French play from the 1860s featuring characters that are citizens of Pontevedro, specifically at the Parisian embassy of that mysterious land.

Everyone is expecting the visit of the now fabulously wealthy Hanna Glawari. She has been recently widowed and left with a huge fortune, a sum that would suit perfectly to shore up the failing Pontevedrian economy. So the embassy staff decide she must be married off as soon as possible to a fellow countryman. A glamorous comedy of errors ensues, with romantic twists and turns and even Can-Can girls thrown in for good measure.

Though only in Madison for one performance, this show is touring the state with performances in Natchez, Hattiesburg and Meridian as part of the Symphony Orchestra and SOMTC's outreach program, located at Southern Miss.

Tickets are available for $20 at www.msopera.org, by calling 601.960.2300, or at the door.
