School of Polymers and High Performance Materials to Host High School Competition Nov. 13

More than 50 students from 7 high schools in the state will participate in the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials High School Competition Thursday, Nov. 13 on The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus. The competition will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Thames Polymer Science Research Center, concluding with an awards ceremony.

The competition is designed to encourage interest in science, including academic and career opportunities, among high school students. Included will be a variety of activities giving students a chance to test their knowledge about polymer science, such as the popular Quiz Bowl which will be held from 9 – 11:30 a.m. in the Polymer Science Research Center Auditorium.

Other scheduled activities will include demonstrations of experiments using polymer materials, problem solving activities and tours of the university's internationally renowned polymer science research facilities. During their visit, these high school students will have the opportunity to interact with polymer science faculty and students.

Participating students will come from high schools in Petal; Pascagoula; Hattiesburg; Simpson County; Hancock County; and Marion County.
