“Home for Everyone”

Jennifer Torres, professor in the Department of Art and Design at The University of Southern Mississippi, recently won the Seawall Art Award for her sculpture “Home for Everyone” at the Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center's 2014 Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit in Portsmouth, Va. in September.

Torres' work, a six-piece outdoor installation, has been featured at the outdoor sculpture exhibition since August. “Home for Everyone” was previously on exhibit behind the Liberal Arts Building on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus until this past spring.

The Seawall Art Award annually recognizes works that have been accepted into a national sculpture exhibition by a jury based on criteria, such as being well-made and aesthetically pleasing.

Torres was able to enter this exhibition as a result of a research grant awarded by the Southern Miss College of Arts and Letters. “I think it's important for people to see how critical these grants are to a faculty member's career,” Torres said. “While people might learn more about me, they also learn about Southern Miss. This helps bring notoriety to the university and our art program.”
