University of Southern Mississippi student Jasmine Thomas was awarded the Mary Peterson Scholarship to attend the Association of Fraternal Leadership Values National Black Greek Letter Conference held earlier this month in Indianapolis, Ind. The conference is designed to teach leadership skills to those involved in Greek life.

Thomas was selected from more than 200 applicants for her academic achievement, leadership positions and involvement in the community.

As the only student invited from Mississippi, Thomas represented Eta Tau Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, The University of Southern Mississippi and the National Panhellenic Council (NPHC).

“It's pretty awesome to be able to something that helped me be a better leader and grow to better myself,” Thomas said. “It was a great thing to be recognized for that.”

Thomas is not only active in her sorority, but is also a member of Lucky Day Citizenship program, a volunteer with DREAM of Hattiesburg, a McNair Scholar and a member of the Honors College. She also began her own community service project “Get Up and Dance.”

Thomas is an elementary education major from Picayune, Miss.
